When Your Suitcase Doesn't Arrive with You

People say we become wiser through experience. Thankfully, experience is also something we can learn from and turn into small habits that help us prepare for the next time.

That applies to every aspect of life – including family holidays.

Twice, we've arrived at our destination without the suitcase carrying all our swimwear. The first time, we hoped it was simply bad luck. But when it happened again, it became a lesson we've consciously chosen to act on.

After a long day of travelling, we always look forward to jumping into the pool or the sea and finally switching into holiday mode – perhaps accompanied by a cold glass of wine. Having that freedom is important to us. Whether we actually go for a swim or not is another matter, but the first time we had to wait for our swimwear, it took three days before our suitcase finally arrived. And not every destination offers swimwear that fits either your body or your personal style.

 

Small Choices That Make a Big Difference

These days, our swimwear always travels in our carry-on luggage.

Our children are now old enough to carry their own swimwear in their own hand luggage, but we make sure everyone has what they need for that first swim after arriving – together with a clean change of underwear. Everyone can cool off. Everyone has fresh clothes.

My laptop, asthma medication and other personal essentials are, of course, always with me. But whenever we're travelling to a destination where water is part of the holiday, swimwear has become a permanent part of my carry-on packing list.

That means if a suitcase is delayed, we can comfortably get through the first day without stress. The holiday starts more calmly because we've already considered one of the situations that might arise – and we're prepared for it.

 

Giving Dust Bags a Second Life

I almost always keep the dust bags that come with new shoes or bags – the fabric bags designed to protect products from dust and scratches when they're not in use.

Over the years, they've become useful for much more than storing products. I use them regularly, both at home and while travelling. They're simple little fabric bags that many people probably overlook, yet they have countless practical uses depending on their size.

I use them to organize swimwear, lingerie, socks and other small essentials, making everything easy to find in both my carry-on and my suitcase. The swimwear I pack in my hand luggage is stored in one of these dust bags. It keeps the straps neatly together and everything organized – practical as well as visually tidy.

You can't predict how a journey will unfold. But you can make a few conscious choices before you leave that help soften the unexpected bumps along the way.

That same dust bag also stores my shoes inside the suitcase – and later my underwear. First the clean items, then the worn ones. When we return home, it's ready to go straight into the washing machine.

It's a small item that simply comes with the purchase, yet in practice it serves far more purposes than it was ever originally intended for.
